Semester Abroad

GMIT students have the opportunity to participate in a Semester Abroad program. Students will study at TU Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany for one semester with scholarship. The program is organized within the cooperation between GMIT, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Students will be able to attend classes in English at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In addition, a three-week intensive German language course will be offered prior to the beginning of the teaching period. The scholarship covers student’s living expenses including the accommodation for the duration of program and the return travel cost.
A committee consisting of representatives of GMIT, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, RWTH Aachen and DAAD will proceed the selection of students. Students will be selected under the condition of a successful completion of the 3rd year at GMIT and the return to GMIT in the end of the study abroad period at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. As the Semester Abroad is part of the regular Bachelor’s degree program at GMIT, GMIT tuition fee applies for that semester.
Following selection criteria apply:
  • Student’s academic performance
  • Quality of the letter of motivation
  • Plausibility of the tentative plan for the study abroad semester
  • English language proficiency
  • Student’s overall engagement and activities beyond his/her studies
  • Student’s potential to represent GMIT
A complete application contains:
  • A letter of motivation
  • An up to date CV
  • Transcript of records
  • A tentative plan for the semester abroad (e.g selection of module)
Application generally opens in March of every year, and detailed information will be provided with the opening of the application in the GMIT website.
